Labour’s legislation addressing the legacy of the Northern Ireland Troubles returns to the House of Commons on Monday for an extended debate and a vote on proposed amendments.
Last week, the government tabled hundreds of changes to the bill, notably stipulating that the Attorney General must consent to any serious prosecutions arising from the conflict under the new framework.
The legislation aims to resolve the outstanding legacy of the decades-long violent conflict, which claimed more than 3,500 lives.
More than a year has passed since the bill was first introduced to Parliament, following the agreement of a joint framework with the Irish government.
A “committee of the whole house” debate is scheduled for Monday, with the bill’s remaining Commons stages set for Tuesday. Should it clear the Commons, the legislation will proceed to the House of Lords for further scrutiny.
