Helen Haines, the independent member for Indi, sustained injuries in a vehicle-related incident outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, regional Victoria, on Monday afternoon.
Emergency services were dispatched to Murphy Street following reports of the incident, with two vehicles responding and the road temporarily closed for investigation.
In a statement, Haines’ family confirmed her injuries and expressed gratitude to those who provided immediate assistance, including bystanders, healthcare workers, and police.
“Our beloved Helen was involved in an incident outside her Wangaratta Electorate Office and is currently receiving medical care,” the family stated. “We appreciate the swift response from the public and emergency services, and request privacy during this time. Please keep Helen in your thoughts.”
Nationals MP Michael McCormack shared his condolences on social media, describing the news as “awful” and wishing Haines a full recovery.
Police are anticipated to issue a formal update on the incident later Monday night. Haines has served the Indi electorate since 2019.
