NME’s latest featured artists on The Cover, Radio Free Alice, have crafted an exclusive playlist to accompany their profile story launch.
The Australian indie band appears in this week’s (October 19) edition of The Cover, NME’s ongoing initiative to spotlight emerging global talent. Their profile, written by Jordan Bassett with photography by Tom Oxley, delves into their journey as a band.
The quartet has compiled an exclusive playlist titled ‘Melbourne Friends’, showcasing artists from their local music scene, including Dumbhead, Rain Dogs, HighSchool, and previous The Cover alumni The Belair Lip Bombs. The full playlist is available on Spotify and Apple Music.
Radio Free Alice will release their debut album ‘What’s In Between’ on October 30. In their The Cover interview, the band discusses their evolution from teenage collaborators to recording artists ready to make their mark on the world. Frontman Noah Learmonth and guitarist Jules Paradiso reflect on their beginnings: “When you’re 14, 15, having someone that you can freely play music with or mess around with is so important and exciting, as opposed to just doing it yourself,” Paradiso recalls. “After a few years of doing it together, you start to realise: ‘Oh, shit, OK – maybe there’s a little nugget of something that we can actually move forward with.'”
The band’s approach to their career reflects a willingness to be openly ambitious. “There’s a lot of people who don’t want to say they wanna be a really big band and then not be a big band and feel awkward about it,” explains Learmonth. “But then, as a result, no one manifests it, and everyone’s just making cassette tapes played in share houses to hipsters, so they’re not getting big. It’s this self-fulfilling prophecy. We never felt that we had to pretend not to be ambitious because there’s too many people in our genre pretending not to be.”
