The Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed Tuesday that the apparent deliberate vehicle attack on independent MP Helen Haines appeared to be an isolated incident, with no known additional threats linked to the assault.
Haines, 65, was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV outside her electoral office in Wangaratta, roughly 200km northwest of Melbourne, on Monday. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the act as “deliberate,” stating it was not a traffic accident.
According to local media, Haines has undergone surgery and lost a leg, though she remains in critical condition at a Melbourne hospital.
The suspect — identified as a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee, Victoria — remains in custody. Federal and state authorities are assessing potential charges, including “causing harm to a Commonwealth public official,” an offense carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle executed a U-turn before striking Haines twice. A bystander, Ricky Jefferies, intervened and subdued the suspect, who was armed with a knife.
Prime Minister Albanese emphasized that the motive behind the attack remains unclear, echoing public concerns over rising political tensions and harassment of officials.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed her shock over the “deeply disturbing attack” and called for unity, urging the public to reject violence against political figures.
In recent years, Australian federal police have recorded a sharp increase in threats and abusive behavior targeting politicians, many of whom continue to work without personal security details due to longstanding norms of accessibility.
Haines, a former nurse and midwife, entered Parliament in 2019 representing the independent-friendly seat of Indi. She has gained recognition for her advocacy on climate action, government transparency, and anti-corruption measures.
