The Champions League league phase is approaching its midpoint, and the next four weeks will bring three matchdays as the competition works through a congested schedule following an extended international break. The standings could shape the race for the top eight, and this week’s slate brings several of Europe’s heavyweight contenders together.
Tuesday and Wednesday feature four leading contenders. On Wednesday, Arsenal travel to Bayern Munich in a meeting between two teams eliminated by PSG last season. First, though, the holders welcome Barcelona in a marquee league-phase encounter that promises to test two of Europe’s most accomplished attacking teams.
A heavyweight league-phase showdown
For years, a Barcelona-versus-Paris Saint-Germain meeting appeared destined for the Champions League final. A contest between weakened versions of those teams would have satisfied nobody, and supporters were eager for a meeting with greater significance.
PSG have an opportunity to avenge the ghost of La Remontada, while Barcelona can respond against a club that has repeatedly attracted some of their star players. The spectacle also carries tactical intrigue: Barcelona’s free-flowing attack will face a defense that has improved considerably, while Hansi Flick’s high line gives PSG a clear route to test the Spanish champions.
PSG have delivered more consistently in Europe, while Barcelona needed greater improvement to return to the same level. Red cards undermined Barcelona’s quarterfinal against Atletico Madrid the previous season, and Yan Sommer’s outstanding goalkeeping for Inter proved decisive the year before. Both clubs have since found another level. Barcelona have reduced their expected goals allowed by 10% per game in La Liga, while Rodri’s interception rate ranks in the 95th percentile across Europe’s top five leagues. That achievement is particularly impressive for a team that so often dominates possession.
Barcelona’s attacking growth has been even more pronounced. Their average output has risen from 2.5 goals last season to more than four this term, with an additional three shots per game and a remarkable 3.3 non-penalty expected goals per 90 minutes. By mid-October, Flick’s side has already produced more expected goals than Getafe managed throughout their 51-point 2025-26 campaign.

Raphinha’s evolution into a center forward has given Barcelona another route to the Ballon d’Or, at least alongside Lamine Yamal. The supporting cast is equally impressive. Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Gabriel Jesus have all been astute additions, while Fermin Lopez continues to offer goals from more central positions. The only significant weakness in Barcelona’s 11-game winning run is that their attackers would benefit from having Pedri provide the final pass more often.
PSG’s numbers have been less prolific, but the XI fielded against Barcelona could differ considerably from the side Luis Enrique uses in Ligue 1. Against Strasbourg, a top-half side in each of the last two seasons, he selected only two starters from the Champions League final, including an out-of-form Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The introduction of Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Desire Doue, Achraf Hakimi and Ousmane Dembele produced a 3-1 victory. Rotation against Monaco and Lille was less successful, although PSG’s domestic position means Enrique can continue to manage his squad without deploying his strongest lineup every week.
The rotation has also sharpened competition within the squad. Warren Zaire-Emery and Magnes Akliouche will be seeking to retain the starting roles they held during PSG’s first-half surge against Manchester City in the first half at the Etihad last week. The 4-2 scoreline did not fully reflect PSG’s chance quality, with their three first-half goals coming from attempts worth a combined 0.34 expected goals. Even so, the response demonstrated that the champions can find another level when required.
Whether PSG view Barcelona as a must-win fixture is less certain, given that their league-phase campaign has not carried the same urgency as the Champions League projects of Arsenal and Liverpool. Their manager also has less pressure to maximize every fixture than Mikel Arteta or Andoni Iraola. Expectations should therefore be tempered, although another meeting between these teams later in the tournament remains possible.

Serie A faces a critical Champions League test
Serie A’s European campaign is not looking healthy after two rounds. Nine teams, including three each from England and Spain, have collected six points from six matches. Italy’s four representatives have earned four points between them, with most of that total coming from Como’s opening victory over RB Leipzig. Last week, all four Italian clubs lost, prompting another round of scrutiny.
The outlook is not quite as bleak as those results suggest. Napoli’s heavy defeat by Arsenal was the only match in which a clear gulf in quality was evident throughout. Roma were 3-1 ahead of Real Madrid and produced the better performance before collapsing in the final 10 minutes. Como also performed better than the scoreline against Feyenoord suggested, Napoli had the better expected-goals return against Villarreal despite spending most of the match chasing the game, and Inter’s underlying numbers were superior to those of Club Brugge. A regular finalist should be beating Belgian opposition, but there remains a credible path for all four clubs to finish inside the top 24.
If the recovery is to continue, this week’s fixtures are pivotal, particularly Como’s meeting with Manchester United on Wednesday. Shakhtar Donetsk occupy a position similar to Club Brugge in the Champions League hierarchy, and Inter should cruise past them at home. Slovan Bratislava appear even more likely to be beaten by Roma, although the pressure remains firmly on Gian Piero Gasperini’s impressive side.
A defeat would leave Roma facing Manchester United and PSG away from home, followed by Sporting at home before Christmas. Their quality should make such a sequence possible, but the collapse against Real Madrid showed how quickly momentum and confidence can disappear. Napoli face a similar threat after their trip to Bodo/Glimt, whose home Champions League record stands at 12 wins, one draw and three defeats, compared with three wins, three draws and nine losses away from home.
Following a disastrous round, every Italian club now has an opportunity to reverse the narrative. The betting market favors each of them in its respective fixture, but they must produce results in line with those expectations before the season begins to escape their control.
Foden gets another opportunity to establish himself at Manchester City
Manchester City’s 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town came at a cost, with Antoine Semenyo facing a knee injury that head coach Enzo Maresca expects to keep him out for eight weeks. Semenyo has become a central figure since arriving on January 9, playing a leading role in City’s attack while appearing in more competitive minutes than any other player in that period. He has scored 13 goals and added six assists, with only Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku producing greater combined output. City have rarely been without his speed, movement and ability to provide an aerial outlet, even if his recent chances have dried up.

City’s relatively small squad means Maresca has two obvious options to replace him. Iliman Ndiaye has yet to make a decisive impact since joining from Everton, and his four starts have produced only 0.37 non-penalty expected goals plus expected assists per 90 minutes, well below the standard expected of a City forward.
Phil Foden’s underlying numbers have been more impressive both as a starter and substitute. He has averaged more than 0.5 non-penalty expected goals plus expected assists per 90 minutes, although he has started only 15 matches in all competitions since Semenyo’s arrival. His recent goal against Ipswich was his first of 2026 and offers an opportunity to rebuild momentum.
Among positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues, Foden ranked in the 89th percentile for non-penalty expected goals and the 85th percentile for expected assists over the previous 365 days. What he has not consistently provided is the specialist quality supplied by Doku’s dribbling, Semenyo’s aerial play and Cherki’s chance creation. His understanding of Maresca’s attacking midfield system also remains less developed, with Enzo Fernandez occupying one of the central roles that might otherwise have belonged to Foden. After failing to maintain the level he reached during his 2023-24 player-of-the-year campaign, the 26-year-old now has a clear opportunity to reestablish himself.
