Zcash is moving closer to implementing a protocol upgrade that will significantly enhance transaction processing speed on its privacy-centric blockchain. Developers have finalized the specific block height at which the Network Upgrade 7 (NU7) will activate, bringing the community one step nearer to realizing faster payment confirmations.
On Tuesday, Zcash core developer Sean Bowe submitted a formal proposal designating block 3,543,405 as the target activation point for NU7. This milestone was ratified during a consensus meeting among the Zcash Improvement Proposal (ZIP) editors—the governing body responsible for approving modifications to the blockchain’s operational rules.
The project’s official node implementation, Zakura, now reflects this block number on its publicly accessible upgrade tracking dashboard, signaling that the upgrade is scheduled to go live on the mainnet around November 5th. Stakeholders and network participants can monitor progress through this transparent resource as the activation date approaches.
The primary technical enhancement introduced by NU7 involves reducing the interval between mined blocks from 75 seconds to just 25 seconds. This adjustment translates into a threefold increase in transaction confirmation speed. For instance, cryptocurrency exchanges requiring three confirmations before crediting ZEC deposits could see wait times drop from nearly four minutes down to approximately one minute and fifteen seconds—a substantial improvement in user experience without compromising security or decentralization guarantees.
The NU7 codebase has been undergoing extensive testing on Zcash’s public test network since early October, allowing developers and node operators to validate stability and performance under real-world conditions ahead of the mainnet launch.
