Binance will begin updating the collateral value of bStocks—tokenized securities linked to U.S.-listed equities—on a 24/7 basis starting October 24 at 00:00 UTC. This change may affect eligible margin accounts, potentially reducing their collateral buffer during times when traditional stock markets are closed.
In an announcement dated October 20, the exchange outlined plans to continuously refresh the bStocks collateral index. During non-trading hours—including weekends, public holidays, and routine maintenance windows—the index will rely on Binance’s own trading prices in place of external market data.
BStocks function as digital certificates that provide price exposure to equities without conferring direct share ownership or shareholder privileges such as voting rights or dividends.
The platform utilizes this index to assess the value of bStocks held as collateral. After applying predefined loan-to-value ratios, it determines how much buying power or margin an account can access. Should bStock valuations decline while other assets remain unchanged, traders might experience a reduced safety margin before hitting liquidation limits.
Off-Hours Pricing Mechanism for bStocks
Under the revised collateral-index framework, Binance employs an off-hours pricing model activated when external market feeds are unavailable. This model uses an orderbook-based Impact Mid Price, smoothed through an Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA), ensuring that sudden fluctuations in the order book don’t cause sharp shifts in collateral assessments.
Additionally, a dedicated movement cap will constrain volatility within the collateral index during these off-hours. While the specific value of this cap wasn’t disclosed in the official notice, Binance retains full discretion to adjust it as needed.
To prevent sudden shocks upon re-entering regular trading hours, Binance will gradually blend the off-hours index with real-time market inputs once external data becomes available again.
The exchange also cautioned that key metrics like Margin Level and Unified Maintenance Margin Ratio (uniMMR) could shift during non-market hours due to fluctuations in bStock prices. Lower collateral figures directly influence these thresholds, potentially triggering forced liquidations if not managed properly.
Only certain bStocks meet eligibility criteria for use as collateral across Cross Margin, Portfolio Margin, and Portfolio Margin Pro accounts, subject to regional restrictions and user verification standards. Traders classified under VIP tiers 0–2 must complete a suitability quiz before participating.
Furthermore, users maintaining bStocks in margin positions may face added restrictions during periods of heightened risk—but these are distinct from liquidation events, which occur only when an account breaches its maintenance margin threshold.
