Since 2022, Marley Guevara has released atmospheric indie pop under the name Maz, including a synth-pop reimagining of Dinosaur Jr.’s “Little Fury Things.” Now, the Utah artist has announced her new EP, Loveandpain, and premiered its title track.
“Loveandpain was written with my great-grandfather’s ghost, drawing on his helplessly romantic spirit,” Guevara says. “To me, the song explores love and pain as two sides of the same coin: the deepest pain you’ve felt alongside the deepest joy, and ultimately the choice to love fully, even when you know love can hurt.”
While creating the EP, Guevara found long-forgotten recordings of her great-grandfather singing and playing guitar. The tapes both inspired the project and provided samples for the music. Listen to the title track below.
