The words from former captain Mark Katich may sound harsh for a team holding a 1-0 series lead, but they reflect the ongoing struggles of an Australian batting lineup distinguished more by its inconsistency than reliability.
In the first Test of last winter’s Ashes, the visitors were bowled out for just 132. Just months later, they produced a commanding 511 in Brisbane. They reached 567 at the conclusion of the Ashes series, only to follow that with a disappointing 198 against Bangladesh in their next Test, suffering a surprising defeat.
Even the positive moments tell a story of mixed results. Matt Renshaw’s impressive 190 in the first Test victory in Durban stood out, yet no other Australian batsman managed to reach a half-century in that match.
Following yet another failure, Marnus Labuschange finds himself under mounting pressure. With the third Test set to begin in Cape Town on October 27, Labuschagne won’t have another opportunity to stake his claim with the bat before then.
His dismissal was particularly costly – edging a drive to third slip for 14 off Anrich Nortje in the morning session, and later attempting to hit spinner Simon Harmer for six over long-on after tea, finishing for 39. This marked his third dismissal in the thirties this series. The situation worsened as he had only survived an lbw appeal on review just three deliveries before his departure.
At 32, the former world number one Test batsman has now gone 47 innings without reaching a Test century.
“Only he knows what was going through his mind when he tried to take Harmer down the ground, against the breeze, when Australia are trying to play for a draw,” Katich commented. “How will the Australian selectors view that dismissal? He’s been given plenty of rope over the past few years, when plenty of others haven’t, but he has.”
