WASHINGTON: First Lady Melania Trump has helped broker a humanitarian ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine in the occupied city of Oleshky to enable the delivery of essential aid and the evacuation of civilians, the White House announced on Friday.
The targeted ceasefire is scheduled to commence on Thursday, with the First Lady emphasizing in a written statement that the humanitarian situation in the city has reached a critical point.
According to the White House, the initiative began when the First Lady learned about the dire circumstances in Oleshky during an event held during the recent UN General Assembly session. She then worked directly with representatives from both nations to establish the terms of the agreement.
Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s Human Rights Ombudsman, acknowledged the First Lady’s role in facilitating the deal, noting its complexity. He explained that the agreement includes an initial ceasefire followed by humanitarian aid delivery and civilian evacuation procedures.
“The operation will be carried out gradually and presents significant implementation challenges,” Lubinets stated in a video message.
Russia’s military leadership has also committed to the agreement. General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff, announced that Russian forces will halt operations along the Kherson front beginning at 4 a.m. Moscow time to facilitate the humanitarian mission in Oleshky. He assured that Russian troops will conduct necessary reconnaissance and ensure the safe passage of humanitarian convoys.
Yana Lantratova, Russia’s Human Rights Ombudswoman, confirmed the First Lady’s mediation role and emphasized that providing humanitarian assistance aligns with Russia’s priorities. She outlined that initial efforts will focus on assessing civilian needs and delivering essential supplies including food, medicine, and hygiene products.
“Safe passage will be guaranteed for those wishing to leave the combat zone,” Lantratova stated, noting that compliance with the ceasefire and security measures for humanitarian vehicles will be essential.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed Moscow’s appreciation for the First Lady’s involvement, mentioning that Presidents Putin and Trump have recently discussed the humanitarian effort.
President Trump highlighted his wife’s commitment to children’s welfare during a White House briefing, stating, “What she wants to do is save children, and that’s her focus.”
The First Lady’s humanitarian work extends beyond this initiative. Throughout her husband’s second term, she has championed causes affecting children in conflict zones, including hosting a UN Security Council meeting on the issue and facilitating the reunification of nearly three dozen children separated by the conflict.
Despite ongoing diplomatic breakthroughs, tensions between Washington and Kyiv remain elevated. Ukrainian officials continue to express concerns about restrictions on critical communication systems and mixed signals from U.S. leadership regarding support for their wartime efforts.
The humanitarian crisis in Oleshky has intensified as winter approaches. Located on the Dnipro River, the city has faced severe shortages of food and medical supplies for months. Infrastructure remains crippled with no electricity, heating, or running water. Minefields and destroyed vehicles block evacuation routes while drone activity persists overhead.
Originally home to approximately 24,000 residents, Oleshky was among the first major cities captured during Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The city suffered extensive damage from shelling and fires, compounded by flooding in 2023 following the collapse of the Kakhovka Dam.
International law requires occupying powers to ensure the welfare of civilian populations under their control. The humanitarian situation in Oleshky represents one of the most pressing challenges in the ongoing conflict.
The First Lady’s statement detailed that civilian leaders from both countries will assess residents’ needs directly. She emphasized that evacuees will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destinations, with documentation by an independent American media organization to ensure transparency throughout the process.
