During a campaign rally in Fort Myers, Florida, President Donald Trump vowed to address his administration’s concerns regarding Cuba once the ongoing conflict with Iran is resolved. Florida is home to a significant and influential Cuban American voting bloc.
In a 90-minute speech, Trump warned that further military action against Iran could be imminent as his administration seeks to address the causes of rising oil prices. This economic pressure has put Republicans on the defensive ahead of the November midterm elections.
Targeting Florida’s large senior population, Trump announced a plan to allocate $250 million to hire at least 5,000 new nurses in elder care facilities across the country.
With the Iran conflict showing no immediate end, Trump adopted a tough stance on Cuba, continuing a pattern of pressuring the communist government. This pressure follows the administration’s earlier actions in ousting the leader of Venezuela.
Trump, who secured 68% of the Cuban American vote in Florida during the 2024 election, announced that American naval forces returning from Iran will stop off the coast of Cuba.
“We will have one of them stop about 50 yards off the coast. They will raise their hands, and then we will send Marco Rubio in to finish the deal,” Trump stated.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a former U.S. senator from Florida, has been leading much of the administration’s Cuba policy.
The rally was designed to bolster the electoral prospects of Florida Republican Representative Byron Donalds, who is running for governor against Democrat David Jolly.
His speech, part of a near-daily series of campaign rallies in friendly territories, covered a wide range of topics. Trump spoke about the size of his crowds, his White House renovations, and his decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
In his second term, Trump has intensified pressure on Cuba. In September, he labeled the island a “failed state” at the UN General Assembly, declaring that “freedom will be coming to Cuba,” which prompted a walkout by the Cuban delegation.
Trump has openly stated that his goal is to fundamentally change Cuba’s government. A U.S.-imposed oil blockade has placed severe strain on the country, which is struggling with fuel shortages and blackouts worsened by decaying infrastructure. UN human rights experts have condemned the oil blockade as a violation of international law.
Trump also escalated his ongoing feud with Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar, a frequent critic, by referring to her home country of Somalia in derogatory terms.
