ROME: Five Italian activists who were detained by Israeli forces in the West Bank returned to Italy on Saturday, according to the Italian Foreign Ministry.
The group was taken into custody on Thursday while accompanying Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest. Israeli officials asserted that the activists were present in an area where farming activities had not received prior authorization from security forces.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, during a visit to Istanbul on Friday, condemned the detentions as “unacceptable,” maintaining that the activists had committed no crime.
In a statement released Saturday, the foreign ministry confirmed that the citizens met with a consular official prior to their departure and were found to be in good physical health. “The return of our fellow citizens detained in the West Bank took place this morning,” the ministry stated.
Israel is currently facing increased international scrutiny regarding violence during the olive harvest, as human rights organizations report frequent attacks and disruptions by settlers against Palestinian farmers.
Tensions in the West Bank have escalated further following an incident Friday, in which Palestinian militants killed two Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint near Hebron, occurring just days before critical elections in Israel.
