Spurs manager Steve Ho acknowledged that WSL referees face a challenging workload and expressed concern that standards have declined relative to the previous year.
Currently, the WSL does not employ VAR or goalline technology, and not all officials are full‑time employees.
The Guardian reported earlier this month that the transition to full‑time refereeing in the WSL is expected to continue until 2029, despite a recent infusion of funding.
When asked how standards could be raised, Ho added that officials require greater support and an increase in full‑time referees.
He noted a probable rule limiting referees to one match per weekend, adding that elite officials such as Lisa Benn have often been stationed away from the centre spot. For major fixtures, he suggested placing them in the middle of the action.
He believes additional support and training are essential, citing the frequent controversies surrounding officiating decisions across matches.
Spurs incurred two bookings in the opening half after Arsenal players repeatedly pulled their shirts, yet no fouls were called – a situation he described as particularly frustrating.
