International Diver Coalition Launches Rescue Operation for Seven Trapped in Laos Cave]
A team of specialist divers traveled to central Laos this week to join rescue operations for seven individuals trapped inside a cave following a landslide triggered by heavy rains last week, according to a Thai volunteer group.
The seven Lao nationals had entered the cave in Xaisomboun province to prospect for gold when their exit became blocked. Volunteer teams from neighboring Thailand launched rescue efforts on Sunday, with international support soon to follow.
Among the incoming reinforcements are noted cave divers including Robin Cuesta from France, Audita Harsono from Indonesia, Japan’s Yoshitaka Isaji, Thailand’s Naruchit Kiatmaneesri, and Australia’s Josh Richards. Kengkard Bongkawong, a Thai cave diver involved in the mission, reported that the health of the trapped individuals was deteriorating while awaiting evacuation.
“The rescue operation presents extremely challenging conditions, involving movement through narrow passages stretching hundreds of meters and requiring underwater diving,” Kengkard explained.
rescue footage captured on Thursday by volunteer Norrased Palasing showed the survivors seated on a ledge deep within the cave, appearing relieved but visibly distressed. Norrased’s team successfully located five of the seven trapped individuals.
During the encounter, Norrased reassured the survivors that rescue teams would supply food while continuing efforts to pump floodwater from the cave. One survivor, identifying himself as Lin, expressed gratitude to the rescuers, telling his mother: “Don’t worry about me, mum. The rescuers are here. I’m safe now. I miss you mum, and I miss you both mum and dad. In a few days I’ll be out.”
The rescue operation continues with teams working against time and challenging conditions to reach those trapped deep within the cave system.
