Arsenal are preparing to initiate contract discussions with David Raya as they move to secure the long-term future of Mikel Arteta’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper.
Raya’s current deal expires in 2028, alleviating any immediate pressure on the club. However, the 31-year-old recently expressed a desire to play in La Liga at some point in his career, providing the Gunners with additional motivation to extend his stay before his contractual situation grows more complex.
Arsenal Planning Contract Talks with David Raya
According to Football Insider, Arsenal are expected to meet with Raya to discuss an extension beyond 2028. The Spaniard has stated he is “very happy” in North London but acknowledged that a return to his homeland remains a future ambition. Despite those comments, the club is not believed to be concerned about an imminent departure.
Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke explained:
“I don’t think Arsenal will be too concerned. He’s under contract until 2028 and I’m sure they probably will look to sit down and discuss a new deal with him because he’s the undisputed number one under Arteta, and I think he will be for the foreseeable future.”
Raya’s performances underscore Arsenal’s determination to retain him. He has kept five clean sheets in eight Premier League appearances this season, saving 73.7 per cent of shots faced. He also claimed September’s Premier League Save of the Month award after denying Enzo Le Fée’s penalty against Sunderland, marking the fourth time he has won the accolade.

Extending Raya Now Would Be Sensible Business

Arsenal would be wise to address Raya’s situation well before he enters the final 18 months of his contract. Since arriving from Brentford, he has evolved into far more than a reliable shot-stopper. His distribution and composure outside the penalty area are integral to Arteta’s possession-based system, while successive Golden Glove awards attest to his consistency.
His Champions League form remains strong, with two clean sheets from three matches, seven saves, and a passing accuracy of 77.34 per cent this season. While there is inherent risk in offering a lengthy extension to a goalkeeper approaching 32, elite stoppers frequently perform at the highest level into their mid-30s. Raya’s game relies heavily on positioning, anticipation, and distribution rather than pure athleticism, suggesting his style will age well.
His comments regarding Spain should not trigger alarm, but they serve as a timely reminder that Arsenal must protect one of their most vital assets. Securing Raya beyond 2028 would provide stability in a position Arteta has spent years perfecting.
