Sofia Boutella has shared the trailer for her latest project, “DreamQuil,” a science‑fiction thriller directed by Alex Prager that opened in select U.S. theaters this week.
Prager’s debut feature premiered at the South by Southwest Festival in Texas in March before receiving a limited theatrical release.
The film features an ensemble cast led by Elizabeth Banks, John C. Reilly and Juliette Lewis, and also includes Kathryn Newton, Lamorne Morris, Toby Larsen and Anna Marie Dobbins.
Set in a near‑future world, the story follows a woman who returns from a virtual retreat to discover that the household assistance robot meant to support her family has begun to intrude on her life and identity.
Boutella portrays the protagonist’s best friend Rebecca, who suggests that Banks’s character undergo a wellness treatment known as DreamQuil.
The trailer showcases moments of Boutella and scenes of Banks undergoing the procedure before returning home to find a “Stepford Wives”‑style android in her residence.
Recent credits for Boutella include Welsh director Jamie Adams’s drama “Only What We Carry,” the Oscar‑nominated “Star Trek Beyond,” the 2025 release “The Killer’s Game,” and Netflix’s “Rebel Moon — Part 2: The Scargiver.”
She also co‑stars alongside “Star Trek” colleague Simon Pegg, French actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, and filmmaker Quentin Tarantino in the same project.
A professional dancer, Boutella began studying ballet at age five. After her family fled the Algerian Civil War in 1992, she settled in Paris, transitioned to rhythmic gymnastics, joined the French national team at 18, and later merged her ballet training with gymnastics and break‑dancing with the Vagabond Crew.
