DoorDash is in advanced discussions to acquire grocery delivery rival Instacart in a transaction that could value the target at approximately $17 billion, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal on Monday citing people familiar with the matter.
An agreement could be finalized as early as this week, though the sources cautioned that negotiations could still fall apart. Investors reacted sharply to the news, sending the companies’ shares in opposite directions. Instacart shares surged roughly 8%, while DoorDash stock declined about 6%.

Prior to the report, Instacart carried a valuation of roughly $13 billion, compared to DoorDash’s market capitalization of approximately $73 billion. The deal would significantly expand DoorDash’s footprint in the grocery delivery sector as the company continues to diversify beyond its core restaurant delivery business.

Instacart previously explored a potential sale in 2021. Since then, competitive pressure has intensified as retail giants Walmart and Amazon have aggressively scaled their own grocery delivery operations.
The prospective acquisition follows DoorDash’s recent international expansion strategy. The company completed its purchase of British delivery firm Deliveroo in 2025 following court approval, adding operations across several international markets. In 2022, DoorDash acquired Finnish platform Wolt in an all-stock transaction that extended the combined entity’s reach to 27 countries at the time.

Representatives for DoorDash and Instacart did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
