A localized ceasefire facilitated by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky took effect early Tuesday, offering a brief respite amid ongoing hostilities.

The pause in combat began at 3 a.m. to enable an upcoming humanitarian aid operation in Oleshky, located in southern Ukraine.
In a statement, her office confirmed that Melania Trump coordinated discussions with civilian representatives from both Russia and Ukraine following briefings from United Nations officials regarding the dire conditions in the city.
This humanitarian initiative precedes a fresh round of U.S.-brokered negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv set for next month, intended to advance efforts to conclude over four and a half years of conflict.
Estimates suggest up to 2,000 civilians remain trapped in Oleshky, facing severe shortages of food and medical supplies. According to the UN, these residents are unable to flee due to widespread use of landmines and frequent drone strikes.
Meanwhile, Russian and Ukrainian military forces acknowledged receipt of the agreed truce through separate official statements.
Last Friday, Mrs. Trump announced the ceasefire agreement, emphasizing that envoys from both sides will conduct door-to-door assessments to determine aid priorities. She added that evacuation plans are in place for those seeking relocation—with options reportedly available to move either into Russian-controlled territory or deeper into Ukraine.
Controversially, conservative U.S. media outlet Newsmax claimed exclusive rights to film observers entering the city on Thursday.
Kyiv Rocked by Escalated Russian Missile Barrage
Almost immediately after the ceasefire commenced at 3 a.m., multiple ballistic missile detonations rocked central Kyiv, triggering air raid sirens throughout the capital and other regions.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported significant damage to the Southern Bridge spanning the Dnipro River, including destruction of associated metro infrastructure. Train services utilizing the bridge were suspended pending safety inspections.
The previous evening saw further escalation, as Russian missile strikes struck the premises of a prominent university in Kyiv, resulting in one fatality and ten injuries. In Kharkiv, officials confirmed two deaths and four injuries during late-night attacks.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the renewed offensive, asserting via social media that Moscow’s actions underscore “nothing but a desire to kill and prolong this war.”
