Michael Carrick has been given the opportunity to revive Manchester United’s fortunes—a decision that has split supporters and Sky Sports pundits.
The embattled United head coach was widely expected to depart after Sunday’s crushing 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, yet he will remain in charge for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea.
United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, and chief executive Omar Berrada met at Carrington on Monday to discuss Carrick’s future, and sources indicate the club had already been evaluating alternatives for the head coach role.
For now, Carrick remains in charge. Below are the key questions surrounding the decision.
A Final Chance for Carrick or a Stay of Execution?
Sky Sports News’ Rob Dorsett: This feels like a stay of execution. Carrick has conducted himself exceptionally well, but Manchester United have now gone eight matches without a win.
The move seems less like a vote of confidence in Carrick and more like the club has yet to identify a replacement. Unifying the dressing room and securing a result at Stamford Bridge on Saturday presents an enormous challenge. If he fails to deliver, the same conversation will begin again.
Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol: It is the right decision. Managers need time. Manchester United’s problems will not be solved in a matter of months; this is likely a three-, four-, or five-year project.
Carrick needs backing. This sends a clear message to the dressing room—and to players who have overstepped in recent days and weeks—that Carrick is the boss. He is in charge.
However, unless results improve, pressure will build again, particularly during the next international break.
Sky Sports’ Alan Smith: It is probably a stay of execution. The club may prefer to appoint a permanent successor rather than leave a gap in between. If they are speaking with a potential successor, that individual might not be able to take over immediately.
The silence from the top regarding Carrick’s support has been deafening. What does this mean for his authority in the dressing room? Every player there knows the manager is likely on his way out.
With all due respect to Carrick, that team could be led more effectively. Roberto De Zerbi’s work at Tottenham shows what a top coach can do with a group of players.
The right coach can improve things regardless of what is happening elsewhere.

What About Man Utd’s Manager Search?
Rob Dorsett: Manchester United appear to have delayed a decision on Carrick because its leadership is still considering options elsewhere.
They may not be actively speaking with candidates, but they are certainly weighing them—that is what any football club would do. This may not be the end of the road for Carrick today, but he faces a very difficult situation going forward, and it is unclear how he turns it around.
It feels as though something is dragging on, and it now falls to the players. If those who performed well last season can deliver and show they are behind the manager, that may be the only thing capable of changing the United bosses’ perspective right now.
Has Fan Support Saved Carrick?
Kaveh Solhekol: It is clear that United fans are not blaming Carrick for what is happening. That said, he must accept his fair share of the blame, and he surely does.
The chief executive, director of football, and co-owners know that chopping and changing managers is not the answer. They know you must back the manager—especially one who signed a new contract just months ago.
The start to this season could have been better, but it is not a situation where all hope is lost. The goal is to finish in the top five, and I believe this squad under Michael Carrick can still achieve that.
Carrick was applauded off the Old Trafford pitch following defeat to Bournemouth, but the same couldn’t be said about the Manchester United players
What Does Carrick Do With Fernandes?
Rob Dorsett: It will depend on Fernandes’s attitude. If he has apologized to Carrick and made genuine efforts behind the scenes to rebuild bridges, I think Carrick will welcome him back and they will move on.
If that has not happened, Carrick is in an invidious position. If he includes Fernandes against Chelsea, he will be accused of weakness and his decision to drop him against Bournemouth will look like a token gesture.
If he leaves him out and United lose again, he will be criticized for leaving out his best player.
Alan Smith: After losing 3-0, one would suspect Fernandes will be brought back in. It would have been better for Carrick to leave him out of the squad entirely, so it would not have become an even bigger story.
If he puts him back in, his teammates may think Carrick has been weak. It is a no-win situation unless United win at Chelsea.
The big question is: how much do the players want to turn things around for their manager? If there is a huge disconnect, do the players want to run more than they have been? We will see that in the first 15 minutes at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
What If Man Utd Beat Chelsea?
Rob Dorsett: In the short term, it would be enough for him to keep his job, but longer-term doubts would remain. Even if he gets a result against Chelsea, it may only delay the inevitable.
Your Views
Jimbo: The correct decision. Removing Carrick would have been another win for player power.
Blev: If I were Carrick, I would resign and leave on my own terms rather than be dragged through the mud. It is inevitable what is going to happen.
Ady: A baffling decision. Carrick looked utterly lost during and after the Bournemouth defeat.
David: Booing the players and cheering Carrick on the weekend caused a major issue and led to him retaining his position.
Gareth: So if Chelsea win 4-0 on Saturday, they will sack him. Just do it now.
Luke: Let’s be honest—if Carrick had been booed at Old Trafford, he would be gone.
Baz: This is a panic situation for the United board, but the players do not believe in him, and keeping him at the helm is a mistake.
