While most artists typically cover a single song during their visits to the BBC Live Lounge, Swedish pop visionary Robyn took a multi-tasking approach to her recent session. Promoting her highly anticipated 2026 album, Sexistential, alongside a wave of new remixes, Robyn brought her creative ingenuity to the studio, executing a brilliant mashup of Tinashe’s “Popstar” and the Teddybears’ classic “Punkrocker.”
Tinashe’s “Popstar” serves as the flagship track from her critically acclaimed 2026 LP, while “Punkrocker”—originally released in 2007 featuring Iggy Pop alongside the Swedish dance-rock group Teddybears—experienced a major viral resurgence last year after featuring in James Gunn’s Superman film. Given Robyn’s rich history of collaborating with Teddybears, including long-term production work by band member Klas Åhlund, her fusion of these two anthems is a natural fit. Both tracks serve as bold statements of identity, allowing Robyn to seamlessly embrace the dual persona of a popstar and a punkrocker.
During the performance, Robyn and her band open with a vibrant, vulnerable interpretation of “Punkrocker,” cleverly substituting the title phrase with “popstar.” They transition smoothly into the chorus of “Popstar,” delivering a playful warning not to fall in love with a star. In Robyn’s creative hands, these two distinct tracks blend into a cohesive, complementary masterpiece. Watch her performance below.
