Zinedine Iqbal, Lyall Cameron and Dylan Tait dominated United’s midfield in the opening period, but the introduction of wingers Jota and Haissem Hassan after the break shifted momentum in Celtic’s favour.
Chief sports writer Tom English asked on BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound whether Dundee United currently possess Scotland’s most potent midfield trio.
Former United wing‑back Allan Preston praised the team, highlighting Zac Sapsford’s ongoing goal threat and lauding the midfield unit. He noted that Iqbal, in particular, was pulling the strings in the first half, making it difficult for Celtic to close down.
Allan Preston described Iqbal as a relentless engine: “He keeps everything ticking, often sitting deep and circulating the ball side to side, rarely losing possession. I was surprised when he was withdrawn.”
Manager Neil Goodwin highlighted his side’s composure, while former United midfielder Scott Allan credited Iqbal – the Iraq international signed from Utrecht – as central to that display, alongside Dylan Tait and Rangers‑loaned Lyall Cameron.
Allan remarked on Sportscene that the trio were “all on the same wavelength”, functioning cohesively.
Playing at Celtic Park demands players who can retain possession, and what stands out about these three is their patience in not rushing the ball.
They are content to wait for pressure to build before shifting the ball laterally. Their boldness and quality shone particularly in the opening 45 minutes.
Their fluidity in midfield was evident; they rank among the league’s best at present, and the key to their success remains composure.
Their willingness to retain the ball, absorb pressure, and exchange passes under duress creates opportunities to exploit space behind opposing lines, aided by their pace.
