ST. PAUL, Minn. — The New York Islanders secured a vital 4-3 overtime victory against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night, marking their first win against a potential Stanley Cup contender this season.
The win came during a road trip that provided the Islanders their first opportunity to test themselves against elite teams as visitors. Despite Sunday’s loss in Dallas, the team matched the Wild blow-for-blow, with Matthew Schaefer’s overtime winner delivering the season’s most impressive result so far.
The Islanders showcased disciplined, physical hockey, limiting the Wild’s star players while capitalizing on their own opportunities. Protecting the middle of the ice and maintaining defensive structure allowed them to neutralize Minnesota’s speed, even as superstars like Kirill Kaprizov and Quinn Hughes generated chances.
Entering the third period tied 2-2, the Islanders dominated with an 8-3 edge in high-danger chances at five-on-five. Despite Ryan Pulock’s early exit due to upper-body injury, their defensive resilience held strong until the decisive moment.
The winning goal emerged 7:14 into the third period after the Islanders killed a penalty. Victor Eklund’s puck battle win led to Adam Pelech’s shot deflecting past Jesper Wallstedt, giving New York a 3-2 lead. However, Matt Boldy’s late goal tied the game with 3:53 remaining, sending the contest to overtime.
In OT, Schaefer capitalized on a two-on-one rush, slotting home the decisive score. While goaltender Ilya Sorokin’s performance raised concerns after allowing three soft goals—including early finishes by Joel Eriksson Ek and Hughes—the victory marked the Islanders’ fourth consecutive shootout or overtime win.
Whether through Schaefer’s two-way play or Emile Heineman’s first-period goal and Bo Horvat’s second-period strike, the Islanders executed their game plan under pressure. The victory eased concerns ahead of a demanding homestand featuring the Oilers, Hurricanes, and Devils.
