The Green Bay Packers celebrated a 27-19 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night, though the win was messier than the final score suggests.
The margin was narrower than it ought to have been.
Trey Smack missed an extra point, and Green Bay committed three turnovers, including a fumble on the opening kickoff. After building a 27-10 lead midway through the third quarter, the Packers allowed Carolina to climb back into contention. These issues—special teams breakdowns and an inability to protect leads—have plagued the team over the last two seasons.
Carolina outgained Green Bay 109 to 32 in the final period.
Nevertheless, the Packers held on to improve to 5-3, while the Panthers dropped to 3-4.
Carolina’s best comeback chance ended when Bryce Young threw incomplete on fourth-and-5 at midfield with 2:41 remaining.
Green Bay receiver Christian Watson departed in an ambulance with 9:11 left in the first half to have a chest injury evaluated at a local hospital. Doctors cleared him, and he returned to Lambeau Field in the ambulance’s passenger seat. Watson hauled in a clutch 7-yard catch on third-and-2 with 2:33 remaining, enabling the Packers to drain the clock and leave Carolina just 22 seconds to respond.
Young was sacked six times, including a fourth-quarter takedown by rookie Dani Dennis-Sutton with four seconds left.
Pressured throughout, Young was hit nine times and finished 23-of-41 for 209 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Chuba Hubbard totaled 81 rushing yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, adding seven receptions for 38 yards. Tetairoa McMillan caught six passes for 58 yards.
Ryan Fitzgerald connected on field goals of 39 and 50 yards.
Green Bay outgained Carolina 354 to 258.
Jordan Love completed 30-of-41 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. His scoring strikes went 12 yards to Tucker Kraft, 24 yards to Matthew Golden, and 4 yards to Josh Jacobs, who also added a 1-yard rushing touchdown.
Jacobs rushed for 39 yards on 21 carries and caught six passes for 13 yards.
Watson finished with eight receptions for 113 yards, while Golden added seven catches for 79 yards.
Coleman Owen fumbled the opening kickoff, and Watson coughed up another fumble in the first half. Carolina, however, managed just a field goal from those three takeaways.
