The gaming community has been paying tribute to the distinguished actor Patrick Stewart, reflecting on his extensive contributions to the medium following his passing at the age of 86. The beloved performer, renowned for his iconic roles in the Star Trek and X-Men franchises, died on Wednesday, October 28, at his home in Los Angeles. His family announced on Thursday, October 29, via Instagram that he had faced “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.”
Spanning nearly seven decades, Stewart’s remarkable career encompassed acclaimed stage work alongside numerous high-profile film and television roles. He also lent his distinctive voice to well over two dozen video games. While many were tied to his signature franchises, others stood as unique, standalone performances.
Among the roles being fondly remembered by fans are his dual portrayal of Zobek and Death in 2010’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and its 2014 sequel, as well as his turn as Emperor Uriel Septim VII in 2006’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Journalist Stu Smith shared a revealing anecdote from Stewart’s recording sessions for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. According to Smith, developer Bethesda provided Stewart with nearly a hundred pages of lore detailing the world and the motivations of his character—a Marcus Aurelius-style emperor contemplating his mortality and the encroaching darkness threatening his empire. Concerned that the sheer volume of material might overwhelm the actor for a character who perishes in the tutorial, Bethesda followed up to check on his progress.
They discovered Stewart was “absolutely delighted,” Smith recounted. The actor reportedly told the team it was the best character preparation he had received in his entire career.

Acting colleagues, including Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, William Shatner, George Takei, and Rebecca Romijn, have also honored Stewart, who was knighted in 2010 for services to drama. He is survived by his wife, Sunny Ozell, whom he married in 2013, and two children. In lieu of flowers, his family has requested memorial contributions be made to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources.
