Less than a week after being identified as a candidate expected to factor into NC State’s head-coaching vacancy, former Wolfpack and NFL quarterback Philip Rivers has reportedly become the primary target of the search, according to On3.com.
No specific timetable has been established for a potential hire, largely because Rivers remains actively engaged as a high school football coach in Alabama. The connection runs deep: Rivers’s son, Gunner, is committed to join the Wolfpack as part of the 2027 recruiting class.
The program moved on from Dave Doeren last Saturday, opening the door for a high-profile return. Rivers starred for NC State from 2000 to 2003 before becoming the fourth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft—initially selected by the New York Giants before being traded to the San Diego Chargers in the deal that sent Eli Manning to New York. He spent 16 seasons as the Chargers’ franchise quarterback, followed by a one-year stint with the Indianapolis Colts in 2020. He briefly unretired in 2023 to start three games for Indianapolis after an injury to Daniel Jones.
Since 2021, Rivers has built a successful tenure at the prep level. He also interviewed for the Buffalo Bills’ head-coaching vacancy earlier this year, signaling his ambition to ascend the coaching ranks.
