Protesters gathered at Lavrio Port in Greece on Saturday to oppose its planned privatization and possible sale to an Israeli firm, according to Anadolu.
Demonstrators expressed opposition to the involvement of Israel Shipyards Industries, an Israeli defense‑sector company that is among the bidders for the port.
They called for the cancellation of the privatization decision and urged that the port not be used for transporting weapons or military equipment.
In an interview with Anadolu, protester Sofia Topalidu said the demonstration was intended to convey a message to the Greek government opposing the sale of Lavrio Port to an Israeli firm and its possible use in warfare and what she described as genocide.
Topalidu voiced strong objections to the sale and criticized Israel’s military actions.
Another protester, Evangelia Sotiropulu, said she opposed the port’s privatization and its potential involvement in what she described as a mechanism supporting genocide.
Sotiropulu stated that the proposed sale posed a serious threat to the residents of Lavrio and condemned the Greek government’s cooperation with Israel, especially regarding the potential provision of port facilities and infrastructure.
She also referenced Greece’s defense procurement agreement with Israel under the Achilles Shield program, noting that approximately €3.5 billion had been allocated to Israeli military‑related projects.
Sotiropulu emphasized that the protesters would not allow Lavrio Port to become a base for Israeli military operations.
