José Mourinho has addressed rumors regarding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential January departure from Real Madrid, acknowledging that difficult selection choices are difficult but emphasizing that the squad’s collective requirements must take precedence.
“It is painful for me. I never want to make a player feel undervalued; I want them to feel confident,” Mourinho stated.
“Naturally, when you construct a squad with two players per position as your core, having a third player step into the lineup is not an ideal situation for me.”
“However, there are priorities that outweigh individual feelings—factors that serve the team’s immediate needs. I determined that, at this moment, the best tactical adjustment was to restructure the midfield by deploying Fede [Valverde] in that role.”
“My focus remains on the team’s needs rather than individual players. Both Trent and Dumfries understood when I explained that this was a tactical decision for the benefit of the group, not a personal slight.”
Mourinho has frequently praised Alexander-Arnold’s tactical intelligence and versatility, noting that positional flexibility and squad rotation are vital to Real Madrid’s objectives.
During his inaugural press conference in August, Mourinho emphasized the necessity of internal competition, citing Alexander-Arnold and Dutch international Denzel Dumfries as key figures in that dynamic.
“It is unrealistic to assume one player will feature in 60 matches while another plays none,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of maintaining high motivation across the entire roster.
This adaptability was demonstrated during the September fixture against Inter Milan. Due to several midfield suspensions, Mourinho utilized Alexander-Arnold in a central midfield role alongside Valverde.
Mourinho expressed satisfaction with the defender’s transition, noting that he “interpreted his tactical instructions perfectly” and that the partnership with Valverde “performed exceptionally well at this level.”
While facing tough selection dilemmas, Mourinho continues to prioritize the readiness and engagement of every player in his squad.
“Our current objective is to ensure every player remains prepared so they feel they can contribute at any moment. Maintaining that sense of importance is vital for team morale.”
