Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Delhi on Sunday, calling for the resignation of India’s top election official following a contentious revision of voter rolls. The demonstration marks the latest in over a month of opposition-led protests challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.
Spearheaded by Congress party president Rahul Gandhi, the protesters argue that the disputed voter list overhaul unfairly advantages Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
Political analysts suggest the mounting opposition pressure represents the most significant challenge to Modi’s leadership since he assumed office in 2014. Nevertheless, the government remains stable, with the next general election not scheduled until 2029.
