In the third part of a four-part Health Matters series on frontier medicine in Hong Kong, Fiona Sun explores how a local biotech start-up is pioneering gene-editing therapies to target inherited eye diseases at their genetic root, and what stands between this breakthrough and widespread patient access.
For fifteen years, Professor Zheng Zongli has dedicated his career to refining gene-editing technologies, striving to make them safe and effective for treating currently incurable diseases.
His scientific journey spans from Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet, where he earned his PhD in medical epidemiology, to postdoctoral research at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Ultimately, this path led him to Hong Kong, where he co-founded GenEditBio, a pioneering gene therapy start-up.
