Adam Klapka recorded his first multi-point game of the season with a goal and an assist, propelling the visiting Calgary Flames to a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Monday.
Rookie William Stromgren netted his first NHL goal, which stood as the game-winner, while Jonathan Castagna contributed two assists as Calgary improved to 6-2-0 over its last eight contests.
Goaltender Dustin Wolf turned aside 26 shots to extend the Flames’ recent dominance over San Jose. Calgary has now captured 10 of the last 11 meetings and 15 of the last 17 dating back to the 2021-22 season. Wolf, a Gilroy, Calif., native who grew up attending Sharks games as a season-ticket holder, owns a sterling 11-2-0 career record against his hometown club.
Sam Dickinson provided the lone response for San Jose, which has dropped four of its last five games. Yaroslav Askarov made 20 saves in a losing effort.
Calgary controlled much of the opening period and broke through at the 14:36 mark when Klapka capitalized on a Castagna forecheck that forced a turnover, intercepting a cross-ice pass and wiring a shot from the high slot past Askarov.
Stromgren doubled the lead at 9:14 of the third period. Castagna initiated the rush, Klapka fed the 2021 second-round pick driving the net, and Stromgren batted his own rebound out of mid-air for his first career tally in just his fourth NHL appearance.
Dickinson pulled San Jose within one before the period’s midpoint, pinching down from the blue line to bury a loose puck during a goal-mouth scramble for his first of the season.
Despite a frantic push for the equalizer over the final minutes, the Sharks were thwarted by several key stops from Wolf.
