While the NFL often sets benchmarks for football innovation, a new officiating initiative from the Big 12 may influence its approach to transparency.
According to Sports Business Journal, the Big 12 will establish a dedicated replay operations center to deliver live audio feeds during replay reviews in broadcasted conference games.
This makes the Big 12 the second Power Five conference to offer audio during replay reviews, following the ACC.
The UFL remains the industry leader in officiating transparency, providing features such as audio replay data, real-time communication between officiating personnel and on-site staff, and periodic on-air interviews with game officials.
The NFL lags behind its peers, as smaller leagues continue advancing officiating accountability measures. This growing transparency gap may pressure the NFL to adopt similar innovations.
