New Delhi, November 3: Suryakumar Yadav may be headed for a fresh IPL challenge, with Lucknow Super Giants reportedly interested in acquiring the Mumbai Indians star ahead of the 2027 season.
Citing a SportsTak report, Lucknow is said to be evaluating Suryakumar for a leadership position after separating from Rishabh Pant following IPL 2026. The news emerges amid increasing speculation regarding Hardik Pandya’s future with Mumbai Indians, as the all-rounder has also been linked with a potential departure.
Since joining the IPL in 2022, Lucknow Super Giants have struggled to cement their status as consistent title contenders. The franchise’s significant investment in Rishabh Pant ahead of the 2025 season failed to yield the expected results, and Lucknow is now reportedly assessing alternative leadership options for 2027.
Suryakumar’s experience and reputation in Indian cricket make him an attractive prospect. The right-handed batter has captained India in T20 internationals, providing him with valuable team-management experience in the shortest format.
Suryakumar Yadav Deserves an IPL Captaincy Opportunity
Despite ranking among India’s most influential T20 batters, the 36-year-old has not yet served as a full-time IPL franchise captain. Ahead of the upcoming season, the five-time champions—under newly appointed head coach Kieron Pollard—are reportedly considering the reappointment of Rohit Sharma as captain for 2027.
Suryakumar has been part of the IPL since 2014 and has established himself as one of the format’s most accomplished batters. His international leadership experience further strengthens his credentials for a potential franchise captaincy role.
Suryakumar holds a notable place in Indian cricket history, becoming the third Indian captain after MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to lead the team to a T20 World Cup title.
However, he was removed from India’s T20I side after guiding the team to T20 World Cup victory in March 2026. A move to Lucknow could present a new challenge: leading an IPL franchise and helping build a squad capable of consistently competing for the title.
Mumbai Indians Reluctant to Lose Both Hardik and Suryakumar?
Suryakumar’s reported openness to the opportunity adds intrigue for Mumbai Indians. That said, the franchise is understood to be hesitant about losing both him and Hardik Pandya during the same transfer window.
Reports suggest Mumbai would consider trading Suryakumar to Lucknow only if Hardik remains with the franchise. MI are reportedly unwilling to part with two key players while reshaping their squad ahead of IPL 2027.
The potential departure of either player would carry significant weight for Mumbai Indians, given their importance to the team’s batting and leadership structure.
IPL 2028 Mega Auction Could Influence Trade Decisions
The looming IPL 2028 mega auction may also shape franchise decisions ahead of the 2027 season.
As teams evaluate long-term squad plans and auction budgets, the upcoming transfer window could see multiple high-profile players involved in trade discussions. Franchises may seek to strengthen specific areas while positioning themselves for the next mega auction.
Suryakumar’s potential move to Lucknow could therefore become a major talking point before IPL 2027, particularly as attention also focuses on Hardik Pandya’s future.
