James Talarico has claimed the U.S. Senate seat for Texas, marking the first Democratic victory in a statewide race there since 1994.
The result, secured on Tuesday, reflects a dramatic shift in Texas, a state long regarded as a stronghold of conservative politics.
The outcome followed a high‑profile endorsement by former President Donald Trump, who backed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton rather than incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn.
Despite Trump’s support, Paxton struggled to generate enthusiasm even within his own party, while campaign spending surpassed a half‑billion dollars—largely funded by billionaire Elon Musk, who contributed at least $212 million to Paxton’s effort.
Musk’s aerospace firm, SpaceX, is based in Texas.
