Terence Crawford appears to be contemplating a return to the ring despite a year of contented retirement, and he has immediately targeted Ryan Garcia for a potential comeback fight.
Crawford, 39, walked away from the sport as an undefeated champion across five divisions and a three-division undisputed titleholder, capping his legacy with a defining victory over Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Despite repeatedly insisting he had nothing left to prove, the switch-hitting great took to social media last night to signal he was considering one final bout.
He subsequently singled out Garcia, challenging the WBC welterweight champion to meet at 160 pounds. The pair have traded barbs for some time, with Garcia frequently criticizing Crawford’s resume in an attempt to lure him back.
Responding to the callout, Garcia issued a blunt dismissal:
“Do you really need to get beat up? Stop the yapping, send an offer or shut up. Simple. Your people know my people.”
Garcia captured his first world title with a wide decision victory over Mario Barrios and successfully defended the strap in September, stopping Conor Benn inside two rounds. With his stock at an all-time high, Garcia represents a marquee opponent for Crawford—provided the significant weight disparity can be bridged.
Nevertheless, skepticism remains high among observers that the bout will materialize, with many expecting the exchange to fizzle out like numerous other proposed matchups in the sport. Adding to the speculation, Crawford later indicated he would also entertain a fight with Floyd Mayweather, another name recently linked to Garcia.
