Apple is reducing the daily expenditure its engineering teams can allocate to artificial intelligence, according to a report by Bloomberg. This shift marks a significant pivot for the company, which has previously focused on integrating AI deeply into its engineering workflows.
In October, Apple lowered the daily AI spending cap for engineering teams from $300 to $200, as reported by Bloomberg. Additional reductions are anticipated, with some daily allowances potentially dropping to $100. Furthermore, the company is considering implementing a daily limit as low as $25 for non-engineering departments.
TechCrunch has contacted Apple for a response to these changes.
The tech industry recently experienced a surge in aggressive AI adoption, driven by pursuits of efficiency gains. However, this approach proved unsustainable as costs escalated, leading many companies to adopt more measured, rationed strategies for AI usage.
Ongoing concerns highlight a discrepancy between the substantial investments required to develop and operate AI technologies and the often ambiguous productivity benefits they deliver.
