A Jordanian security officer was killed and a second wounded Thursday in a stabbing attack in Amman, according to the Public Security Directorate, which confirmed the assailant has been taken into custody.
The incident occurred near the Sri Lankan embassy. Preliminary findings indicate the attacker had planned the assault against security personnel in what authorities are treating as a terrorist act.
The attack comes less than two weeks after gunmen opened fire at a funeral in Karak governorate on October 23, killing nine and wounding 40 in a rare strike targeting the country’s Christian minority. Authorities have not established a connection between the two events.
Following the church shooting, King Abdullah II vowed that terrorists would not be permitted to undermine the nation’s unity and security, a statement that preceded Jordanian military strikes in Syria.
