Roslovic Rest Day While Lettieri Joins Matthews and Cowan on Top Line
Ahead of Saturday’s clash with the Montreal Canadiens, the Toronto Maple Leafs must address two key issues. First, they need to finalize their lineup. Second, they must curb the excessive defensive zone time that has plagued their play.
During Wednesday’s practice, Jack Roslovic was given a maintenance day after scoring twice in Tuesday’s 3–2 loss to Utah, opening a spot for Vinni Lettieri to join Auston Matthews and Easton Cowan on the top line. Coach Jim Hiller highlighted the need to reduce time spent defending in their own end.
Roslovic’s absence from practice is nothing to worry about; his two‑goal performance against Utah earned him a rest. Lettieri gets the opportunity to play alongside the star forwards and demonstrate his skills. However, Roslovic has been productive in that role, and the real question remains whether the supporting lines can produce consistent offense.

John Tavares continues to skate in a red non‑contact jersey with Nick Paul and William Nylander, indicating progress toward his return. Coach Hiller said Tavares must complete Friday’s practice and pass a fitness test before rejoining the lineup. Meanwhile, Gavin McKenna stayed with Dakota Joshua and Colton Sissons, and Brandon Duhaime, Teddy Blueger and Zack MacEwen remained together on the fourth line.
Hiller Emphasizes Need for Better Defensive Coverage, Suggests Offensive Pressure as Solution
Toronto allowed 36 shots to Utah and is tied for second most five‑on‑five goals in the NHL. Hiller argues that rather than focusing solely on defensive positioning, the team should spend more time in the offensive zone, applying pressure and reducing the time opponents have to set up. Better forechecking and puck possession can alleviate defensive stress. William Nylander believes improved communication and attention to detail will help, while goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky remains confident the group possesses the necessary tools to refine its system.

Key Questions Ahead of Saturday’s Battle with Montreal
Friday’s practice will offer insight into the lineup for Saturday’s game against Montreal. The status of John Tavares and whether Jack Roslovic returns to his usual spot with Matthews and Cowan will be crucial. Toronto needs its offensive stars available and consistent play from its forward groups. Defensively, the focus will be on translating coaching emphasis into better habits. The Canadiens will provide another test, and the Leafs must show that lessons from Tuesday’s loss are being absorbed.
