Venezuelan authorities have launched strikes against Colombia’s National Liberation Army (Ejército de Liberación Nacional – ELN). The armed group has long used Venezuelan territory as a refuge along the porous border. In this episode of InSight Take, Managing Editor Deborah Bonello, Venezuela Team Leader Alejandra Betancourt, and Co-director Jeremy McDermott examine whether the Rodríguez government’s shift marks the beginning of a sustained campaign against the guerrillas.
The strikes follow mounting pressure from the United States for the Rodríguez administration to crack down on the ELN, which has enjoyed protection under the Chavista regime for decades. It remains unclear whether the attacks will continue or represent an isolated operation.
