OpenAI Secures $11 Billion Funding Round, Valuation Reaches $1.25 Trillion
OpenAI has reportedly secured $11 billion in a new funding round that values the AI lab at $1.25 trillion.
Bloomberg reported the new financing on Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter. The $11 billion represents part of a larger funding round that has not yet closed, according to the outlet. The round is expected to conclude in the coming weeks and could total roughly $20 billion, a source told Bloomberg.
Earlier in September, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI was aiming to raise $30 billion in the upcoming round. The current figures fall well short of that target.
TechCrunch has reached out to OpenAI for comment and will update this story if it responds.
The announcement comes only hours after Bloomberg also reported that potential buyers of shares in Anthropic’s stock IPO are eyeing a substantially lower valuation than the AI firm had targeted. Bloomberg notes that some potential investors believe Anthropic’s valuation could be as low as $1.1 trillion, compared with the $2 trillion that investors were said to anticipate roughly a month earlier.
OpenAI had previously indicated it would go public this year but subsequently delayed its plans. Anticipations point toward an IPO next year.
The AI sector faces heightened uncertainty. The recent U.S. midterm Democratic landslide and broadly negative sentiment around data centers have created unease throughout the market, with many anticipating possible regulatory challenges ahead.
