[Mohammed Shami Concludes Test Career: A Legendary Pacer’s Retirement]
Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has announced the conclusion of his Test career, ending a distinguished journey in the longest format of the game. Widely regarded as one of India’s most reliable pace bowlers of the past decade, Shami leaves behind an impressive record, notably contributing to several memorable victories through his pace, movement, and reverse‑swing abilities.
The 35‑year‑old announced his decision on social media late Friday, expressing gratitude to his teammates, coaches, family, and fans for their support over his international tenure. His retirement marks 13 years after his debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
His Test debut came on 6 November 2013 against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, where he seized nine wickets for 118 runs – his finest performance in a large‑sample career of 64 Tests.
Throughout his career, Shami evolved into one of India’s most effective fast bowlers, renowned for his reverse‑swing mastery. His success on sub‑continental pitches was complemented by consistent impact in overseas tours, cementing his role as a reliable component of India’s pace attack.
In his final years, fitness setbacks shaped his tenure. After an outstanding ODI World Cup campaign at home, Shami underwent ankle surgery and later managed knee injuries that kept him away from the international stage for a prolonged period.
He returned to the national team in January 2025, debuting in the T20 format and subsequently being named in India’s Champions Trophy squad.
After the final against New Zealand, Shami declined to appear in any international competition. He has continued playing domestic cricket for Bengal, participating in three Ranji Trophy matches and being selected for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy side.
He ultimately finished as India’s 12th‑highest Test wicket‑taker and the sixth most successful Indian fast bowler, accumulating 229 wickets.
