After a brief theatrical run, the Western remake Angel and the Badman has arrived on premium video-on-demand platforms. The film, distributed by faith-based studio Angel Studios, became available for rental and purchase on November 6.
The project marks a notable convergence of genre talent. Neal McDonough, recognized for his work across Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone franchise, stars alongside Tommy Lee Jones, whose turn in No Country for Old Men remains a benchmark of the neo-Western. Zachary Levi (Chuck, Shazam!) leads the cast as the injured gunslinger at the center of the story.
Directed by Julio Quintana, the picture reimagines the 1947 John Wayne classic, following a wounded outlaw nursed back to health by a Quaker family while a vengeful adversary closes in. Despite a 98-minute runtime, the film struggled to find traction in theaters, grossing approximately $4 million domestically over a window of less than a month. By the eve of its digital debut, daily receipts had dwindled to roughly $1,300 nationwide.
Critical reception was tepid; the film holds a 23% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience score tells a different story, sitting at 78%—a pattern consistent with Angel Studios’ faith-driven releases, which often overperform with core demographics despite mixed critical notices. The studio has recently pursued a broader mainstream push with star-led genre titles carrying spiritual undertones, such as the Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson vehicle Runner.
