Bitcoin Developer Cory Fields Proposes Quantum Landmine Mechanisms to Deflect Theft
How does a quantum landmine work?
Imagine an owner controls 1 BTC in an old, possibly vulnerable wallet. Before Q-Day, a tiny separate quantum‑safe Bitcoin output contains a hidden proof of the original private key, disguised as a sealed ownership receipt visible only to outsiders.
Outsiders can see the output but not the embedded evidence or that it is a trap.
A future quantum thief who recovers the user’s old private key could trigger a hidden landmine. Under Fields’s suggested rules, the thief cannot simply take the 1 BTC; they must first deposit 1 BTC of their own from a quantum‑safe wallet as collateral.
