Samoa’s hopes of reaching the World Cup final were dashed once again, as they suffered a second consecutive semi-final defeat against Australia. The loss echoed their 30-10 reversal in the final four years prior, highlighting a persistent challenge against their trans-Tasman rivals.
Australia maintained their perfect record against Samoa, winning all six previous encounters. However, this defeat carried a deeper sense of frustration, as Samoa’s passionate pre-match Siva Tau war dance underscored their belief in victory. The aggressive display, involving face-to-face confrontations, set the tone for a highly charged contest.
The match was marred by contentious refereeing decisions, which left Samoa aggrieved. Two tries were disallowed: one by Crichton in the first half, and another by Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow late in the game, following a ruling that contact between Manuleleua and Liam Martin was illegal. Tensions escalated before halftime when Spencer Leniu was sin-binned for dissent by Australian referee Adam Gee.
Samoa coach Ben Gardiner responded curtly to questions about the decisions, stating, “You guys saw the game. You report on it.” When asked if his team’s lack of discipline had cost them, he expressed uncertainty, attributing the challenges to a cascade of penalties that hindered their fightback. “On the back of some of the penalties that were given, we just didn’t react very well. There was one thing into another and then a try. It made it difficult to be able to fight back from that,” he said.
Gardiner acknowledged the difficulty of chasing an 18-20 point deficit at halftime but praised his team’s second-half effort. However, he pointed out their struggles: “We scored a try and gave up another one straight away. We bounced off too many tackles in that early period, missed too many tackles in the game in general.” He emphasized that the physicality was inherent to Test matches, concluding, “That had nothing to do with the emotion. That’s a Test match, that’s what you do. It’s physical, there’s push and shove, stand your ground.”
