Assane Sarr Named Best Goalkeeper as Senegal Claims U-17 AFCON Title
Senegal’s Assane Sarr has been awarded the best goalkeeper of the TotalEnergies CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2026, following his decisive performances that helped secure the Young Lions of Teranga’s second U-17 continental title.
The 16-year-old captain emerged as the standout performer of the tournament, making crucial saves throughout the competition and proving decisive in three penalty shootouts. Senegal’s journey to victory included a 1-1 draw with Tanzania in the final, which the defending champions converted to a 4-2 penalty victory.
Sarr’s most remarkable display came in the semi-final against host nation Morocco, where he delivered a masterclass in penalty shootouts after a 1-1 draw. His exceptional reflexes and composure under pressure helped Senegal overcome the home crowd’s challenge with a 7-6 victory on penalties.
The Ndangane FC goalkeeper’s ability to read penalty takers and maintain concentration was instrumental in booking Senegal’s place in the final. His performance against Mali in the quarter-final, another West African derby won 4-2 on penalties, further demonstrated his tournament-winning qualities.
