The New York Islanders are facing a critical offseason following a disappointing campaign that saw them finish eight points outside the Eastern Conference’s wild-card position. In just his second year as general manager, Mathieu Darche has demonstrated a willingness to pursue significant roster moves, including the June acquisition of defenseman Noah Dobson from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for prospect Emil Heineman and two first-round selections. Since January, Darche has bolstered the lineup with veterans Brayden Schenn, Carson Soucy, and Ondrej Palat.

According to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, Darche expressed interest in re-signing captain Anders Lee before pursuing other moves, suggesting the Islanders’ GM may look to create salary-cap flexibility through player transactions. This has fueled speculation about the future of high-salaried forwards, with The Athletic reporting that the Islanders explored moving winger Mathew Barzal to create cap room.

Barzal, 29, carries an $9.15 million average annual value through the 2030-31 season and has spent his entire NHL career with the Islanders, establishing himself as the franchise’s leading scorer over the past nine seasons with 534 points in 609 games. While Postmedia reported the Islanders were exploring the trade market for Barzal, The Hockey News’ Russell Macias and Stefen Rosner indicate the team isn’t actively shopping their playmaking forward, noting that while trade inquiries may exist, Barzal isn’t on the move with a 22-team no-trade list already in place. Reports suggest the Utah franchise “kicked tires” on Barzal last summer but ultimately decided against a deal.

Meanwhile, the New York Rangers continue to monitor the trade market for center Vincent Trocheck, who attracted significant attention prior to the March trade deadline. Despite considerable speculation, general manager Chris Drury didn’t receive any suitable offers and may revisit trade discussions during the offseason. The Montreal Canadiens were reportedly among teams interested in Trocheck at the deadline, though it remains unclear if that interest persists. According to New York Post’s Mollie Walker, the Toronto Maple Leafs recently reached out to the Rangers regarding Trocheck’s availability following news that Max Domi will be sidelined indefinitely due to back surgery complications.

Trocheck, 32, could represent a strong fit for Toronto’s second-line center needs, contingent on whether the veteran accepts a trade to Canada and his willingness to relocate. Should a deal materialize, Walker reports the Maple Leafs might offer left winger Nick Robertson and defensive prospect Ben Danford in return, though the Rangers could express interest in Toronto’s 23-year-old power forward Matthew Knies, whom the Leafs may be reluctant to part with.
