A former University of Surrey student has been taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder following a crossbow incident in Guildford.
The victim, a man in his fifties and a member of the university’s campus safety team, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Royal Surrey County Hospital near the scene.
Police were dispatched after a crossbow shooting was reported at approximately 9:50 am on Thursday at the Manor Park student village. A 21‑year‑old suspect of Saudi nationality has been detained pending further investigation.
In a statement, Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen said, “This incident understandably raises concerns within our community, and I can reassure residents that no further suspects are being pursued. We are cooperating closely with the university as the investigation proceeds.”
The suspect was apprehended at the scene shortly after the assault, and investigators are now working to determine the full circumstances of the attack.
The victim remains in serious condition in hospital, and his next of kin are being supported by officers.
A university spokesperson confirmed that a member of the campus safety team was seriously injured and is receiving medical care. “Surrey Police are leading the investigation, and we are providing them with our full support,” the spokesperson added.
Surrey Police noted a substantial security presence at the site while the university campus remained open to the public.
Officers are appealing for anyone with information to contact the force or Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
