A UNIFIL peacekeeper was killed and two others wounded after mortar shells hit their position near Marjayoun in southeastern Lebanon, the mission said on Thursday, citing Anadolu.
The fatality occurred late Wednesday night when mortar fire struck the peacekeeper’s location, causing critical injuries. He was air‑lifted to a hospital in Beirut, where he later succumbed to his wounds.
The two other peacekeepers, from El Salvador and Spain, received treatment at a medical facility within a UNIFIL base.
UNIFIL has opened an investigation to determine the precise circumstances of the attack.
The mission noted a rise in mortar trajectories and impacts in southern Lebanon and called for an immediate end to the violence.
Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry condemned the strike on the UNIFIL position, identifying the deceased soldier as Sgt. Milovan Jovanovic of Serbia, born in 1989, and describing attacks on peacekeepers as a serious violation of international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The ministry expressed solidarity with UNIFIL leadership, awaited the investigation’s findings, and wished a swift recovery to the injured peacekeepers.
Lebanon and Israel agreed on Wednesday to renew their fragile ceasefire and create “pilot zones” under exclusive Lebanese army control, excluding non‑state actors. The agreement followed a fourth round of US‑mediated talks at the State Department.
