After a series of artists withdrew from the Freedom 250 concert series upon discovering the organizers’ ties to President Donald Trump, the former president announced on Thursday that he would replace the shows with a rally featuring his own appearance.
The announcement followed Trump’s earlier call for the concerts’ cancellation and his suggestion that he perform instead, following the sudden exits of several musicians. The rally will still include musical performances and will feature country artist Lee Greenwood, known for the patriotic hit “God Bless the U.S.A.”
Speaking on Truth Social, Trump stated that the “Greatest Rally, EVER” would take place on June 24 in Washington, D.C. He opined that he did not want “singers with no talent, but big fees to put you to sleep,” and that the event would consist of “you, me, a few speakers, and the greatest music ever played.” He added that opera singer Christopher Macchio would join the lineup to perform “Nessun Dorma” and other crowd‑pleasers.
Last month, the Freedom 250 organizers, led by Trump appointee Keith Krach, announced a lineup that included Martina McBride, Flo Rida, the Commodores, and nostalgia acts such as Milli Vanilli and Vanilla Ice. Shortly after the announcement, many booked acts—including Morris Day, the Time, and Young MC—declined to participate. “It’s a no for me,” Day said on social media.
Young MC later told VIBE that he was unaware the event was being promoted as “Trump‑backed.” He explained that he had not been given a choice to participate and had been subjected to a “bait‑and‑switch.” Other artists, such as McBride, Bret Michaels, and the Commodores, also withdrew, leaving the Freedom 250 series—scheduled to run from June 25 to July 10 at the National Mall—without replacement performers.
Despite the setbacks, Trump remains eager to promote the rally. In a Truth Social post, he highlighted the inclusion of the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the Armed Forces Choir, the United States Marine Band, and the Joint Armed Forces Chorus, stating that the event would feature “all of your favorite hits” plus “a fine and highly dignified gentleman” – himself.
