WWE has confirmed that the AAA Mega Championship will be defended on the second night of TripleMania 34 this September.
TripleMania will span two nights and two venues: the first night will be held in Las Vegas on September 11, and the second night will take place in Mexico City on September 13.
On the latest WWE AAA broadcast, General Manager Rey Mysterio announced details about the upcoming event.
Mysterio confirmed that the AAA Mega Champion, whoever holds the title at TripleMania, will defend it on the second night in Mexico City.
Dominik Mysterio is currently the Mega Champion, having captured the title from El Hijo Del Vikingo at Worlds Collide last September.
El Grande Americano earned a title shot after winning the Rey De Reyes tournament a few weeks ago, making a showdown between Dominik Mysterio and El Grande Americano the most probable main event for TripleMania night two.
AAA’s Growing Appeal Mirrors NXT’s Black‑Gold Legacy
In recent months, WWE AAA has been quietly gaining popularity, thanks to a high‑quality in‑ring product that ranks among the best offerings within the WWE family.
However, because it aired exclusively on YouTube and was not broadcast as a mainline WWE show in the United States, its audience was initially limited.
That changed after the recent El Grande Americano mask‑versus‑mask match, which received an enthusiastic response and was heavily promoted by WWE in the following week.
With a larger audience than ever since WWE acquired the brand, AAA has the potential to evolve into a property comparable to NXT’s Black‑Gold era of the late 2010s.
While today’s NXT differs markedly from its earlier incarnation, AAA’s emphasis on in‑ring action brings it closer to the classic NXT style that featured bouts such as Johnny Gargano versus Andrade, Gargano versus Tommaso Ciampa, and Ilja Dragunov versus WALTER (Gunther).
Although there are stylistic differences inherent to lucha libre, the in‑ring approach of AAA is not far removed from the classic NXT style, distinguishing it from the broader main‑roster product.
As viewership continues to rise, AAA could ultimately become the next major NXT‑style brand.
