John Lithgow continues to defy expectations, proving that exceptional talent only improves with time.
At 80, Lithgow claimed the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his role in “Giant,” becoming the oldest male performer ever to win a competitive acting Tony. This surpasses the previous record of 77, held by Roy Dotrice for his turn in “A Moon for the Moon for the Misbegotten” in 2000.
The acclaimed actor also set a new milestone by achieving the longest interval between competitive acting Tony victories—53 years—since his first win in 1973 for “The Changing Room.” This record exceeds Angela Lansbury’s prior mark of 43 years and places Lithgow ahead of Patti LuPone and Frank Langella.

Lithgow’s third Tony Award came against strong competition, including Nathan Lane’s pursuit of his fourth nomination for “Death of a Salesman.” The win also crowns Lithgow among an exclusive group of just four performers to secure victories across three different acting categories—a distinction shared with Kevin Kline and Boyd Gaines, while Audra McDonald stands alone as the only artist to achieve four Tony wins.
“I’m such a lucky actor,” Lithgow said during his acceptance speech. “This is my third Tony Award. My first one was 53 years ago at my Broadway debut in the American premiere of an English play, which by an amazing coincidence originated at London’s Royal Court Theatre, just like ‘Giant.’ Two Tony bookends with 53 years between them. In those years, I have worked with hundreds of just fantastic theatre artists. I’ve had dozens and dozens of ecstatic moments on the stage, but I have to tell you right now, this moment has got to be one of the best.”
